On April 24, 2015, over 250 men and women gathered in Atlanta, GA for this first-ever, premier event dedicated to celebrating kinky hair. Created by Trudy Susan, founder of 4C Hair Chick, Kinky Hair Unlocked was started because she noticed a need for an event focused on healthy, kinky hair. Whether permed, natural, transitioning, or weaved, she wanted to create a space for people to come and get educated, be informed, and be empowered. One where they could learn about the science behind hair, accepting your hair texture, styling, and more. Event sponsors of this first-ever event included premier sponsor Dark and Lovely, along with Eden BodyWorks, Myx Fusions Moscato, Tendrils and Curls, Ever Butter, Naturally Supreme, and Hot Heads.
Located at 595 North in downtown Atlanta, the event began with a happy hour sponsored by Myx Fusions Moscato. Attendees enjoyed signature drinks such as the Curl Power and L.O.C. Tini and bites from Chef Razia Sabour. In this intimate space, guests enjoyed music curated by Dj Cha-Cha Jones, who played the hottest hip-hop and R&B during the activities. With an opportunity to learn about different product offerings for naturals, guests enjoyed shopping at the Tendrils and Curls Boutique. The event was captured digitally as guests took fun pictures at the OMG Booth and shared them on social media using the hashtags #4cdarkandlovely and #kinkyhairunlcoked. Guests also had the chance to strike their fiercest pose on the purple carpet for the event photographers.
Hostess Tiffany introduced the event, and kicked it off with a naturalista group selfie. Attendees then let their hair down and played an interactive ice-breaking activity sponsored by Dark and Lovely. It was a great chance to meet other women in attendance, and learn about their natural hair stories. Invited bloggers in attendance included the creators of Kinky Curly Coily Me, NaturalMe 4C, Sister Scientist, and Klassy Kinks. After the happy hour, guests made their way to the main stage for 3 workshops.
During the three presentations, Kinky Hair Unlocked attendees were treated to insights from vlogger Jouelzy, hair trichologist Dr. Kari Williams, and celebrity hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood, Kinky Hair Unlocked introduced attendees to a rich, social experience focused on natural hair. As founder Trudy shared, “I wanted to create a unique, in person hair care experience unlike any other.” Susan elaborated, “Kinky Hair Unlocked is different than other natural hair events because our line-up of speakers is comprised primarily of certified experts – including a scientist, trichologist, and celebrity cosmetologist and stylist – that can speak to the science, chemistry and expert techniques that lead to strong, healthy and beautiful hair. It’s a perspective that is often left out of the natural hair conversation.”
In a Behind the Brand segment with Dark and Lovely, hostess Tiffany sat down with Dark and Lovely’s AVP of Marketing, Sivonne Davis. The conversation introduced attendees to the company’s new product line, Au Naturale Moisture LOC, and offered a chance to learn more about the brand’s approach to natural hair care.
Throughout the workshops, attendees won door prizes from Curl Collection, Ever Butter, Kinky Tresses and Wondercurl. One lucky winner received a $500 gift card to a local Atlanta-area restaurant, after posting a picture from the event on Instagram. VIP guests also enjoyed exclusive access to a second happy hour experience complete with private catering. Full size products from Dark and Lovely, Myx Fusion, Eden Body Works, SheaMoisture, and Camille Rose Naturals graced the bags of our VIP guests along with samples from Shemaid and Curly Hair Solutions. The full audience received a special gift from Dark and Lovely and Alaffia. Active social media engagement among attendees also helped spread the message of Kinky Hair Unlocked: love your hair.
